Time Machine Troopers Hal Colebatch 9781447560913 Books

Only a confident and skilled novelist would have dared write the sequel to a classic like H.G.Wells' Time Machine, and only a master of the craft could've succeeded as Hal Colebatch has done with Time Machine Troopers.

The original alternated between late-Victorian London and the same city 802,701 years deep into a future where misshapen, underground dwelling Morlock descendants of the 1890s' Working Class harvest and eat the dainty, effete Eloi descendants of bourgeois toffs, viewed through the prism of Wells' Fabian Socialist imagination.

Dr Colebatch seamlessly resumes this classic story, still told in the first person by the Time Traveller himself, with the same measured tone of voice and moral musings that H.G.Wells would likely have chosen had he written a sequel, but with a distinctive undertow of dry humour that enlivens an already entertaining read. Plus, unlike Wells' darkly apocalyptic ending, Hale Colebatch's Traveller revisits the same distant future - accompanied by General Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting Movement, no less! - and together they regenerate a decayed civilization that has more than a passing resonance for our own Age of Uncertainty...

Time Machine Troopers could well become a Sci-Fi classic in its own right because, like all timeless tales of quest and adventure, it speaks of heroism, and endurance, and love. Summing up: this needs to be on every Required Reading List that includes Wells' original novel or any similar exploration of the late-Victorian English mindscape.

Time Machine Troopers Hal Colebatch 9781447560913 Books Reviews

A splendid sequel to H. G. Wells's original "The Time Machine", telling of the time-traveller's second journey into the distant future to battle the vile, cannibalistic Morlocks and save the gentle Eloi. Or are the Morlocks and Eloi both perhaps misunderstood? Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the boy scouts, Winston Churchill, who supplies the time-traveller with modern weapons, and Wells himself feature as characters. The first chapters set the scene, followed by non-stop action and plenty of surprises, with a startling and unexpected but very satisfactory ending.Highly Recommended.
Hal Colebatch has written an unselfconscious `ripping yarn' that subverts and demolishes Wells' nihilistic determinism of the original "Time Machine". The narrator of the original novel in 1904 returns to the bleak future of the year 802,719 to rescue the Eloi from the subterranean Morlocks, taking with him the actual historical figure of General Baden-Powell, military hero and founder of the Scouting Movement. Winston Churchill and Wells himself also play their parts in this fast-paced work of science fiction.

What gives narrative depth to this novel is the realisation that the Morlocks are neither uniformly evil nor irredeemable. Some of them seek to preserve genuine scientific achievements, break free of cannibalism, and join the resistance to more savage Morlock invaders. If the time machine can bring victory, it will not be enough - these Morlocks and Eloi can only rebuild their world with the help of the values and traditions of the confident era of 1904.

As a character in this adventure, Wells is treated with some sympathy. However Colebatch rejects Wells' materialist vision and socialist warning of the 1895 novel, that the proletariat will take its revenge on the elites (Eloi). Instead of this class warfare, Colebatch reveals that the Eloi and Morlocks represent the estrangement and decay of respective artistic and scientific elites. The world of 802,719 has been debased by the loss of religious feeling and the notions of honour championed by Baden-Powell.

Readers get not only a more satisfying narrative than the original, but a clear message that the future can be redeemed.
I enjoyed Time Machine Troopers. It took up where Wells' book left off. Actually, it delved deeper into the hero's mind as he worked his way through the despair of losing Weena and deciding to do something about the Morlocks and the Eloi. Choosing a companion was an interesting process as he considered such possibilites as Churchill, General Gordon, and even Wells. Major-General Baden-Powell, the Hero of Mafeking, was perfect. (He accomplished a lot later in his life also.) And deciding what supplies, including weapons, to take--being limited in space--was challenging. Baden-Powell helped a lot with that--and other things.

This story is a rousing adventure, while at the same time taking a look at history and choices with fascinating background and literary references. Fighting Morlocks and training Eloi wasn't easy. It's a good thing he had back-up. And some assumptions he had made turned out to be wrong... I can't say more and spoil your enjoyment of the story, but it is imaginative, well-written, full of twists and turns and setbacks and the carnage of war. Highly recommended. This is a classic. And one of the best sequels to any story I've ever read.
Hal Colebatch has written an exciting sequel to H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine." (He even incorporates Wells as one of the characters.) It is an excellent book, and with a plotline that I believe is becoming increasingly relevant. Because, although it is at heart a ripping adventure story, it is also very much a book of ideas. Where Wells darkly envisaged a society descending into a morass of class warfare, Colebatch shows how we can redeem our culture through old-fashioned virtue. Highly recommended.
