I was leery of reading this at first, thinking that there would be graphic depictions of abuse involving children. I took the plunge, though, and was glad I did. The writing is dense, in the sense that the words are operating on multiple levels. The pacing is quick but I read and re-read multiple paragraphs, not because I didn't understand the words, but because they were so impactful. It is obvious that this author took a lot of time, care and thought in this short story. I'm hoping the author takes the plunge and commits to a novel as his next major endeavor. It's rare I find a writer who can take me where I want to go. I start many books, finish few.
I was reluctant to read this. I didn't really know, of course, what it was fully about and I was afraid of the darkness I might find. And there was darkness. But there was also light. And it was going through the darkness, then entering the light, that made the story whole.
There was something else, a bit hard to describe, that really affected me. I could feel the author's energy very intensely as I read. It was as if he had gripped my shoulders and was hissing the story into my ears. He was going to make sure I heard all of it. I've never run across that before. I could also feel his energy and power in the way he moved his words, which was very, very fast.
I usually detach when I meet darkness, but with this story, I stayed fully focused, fully aware, for the whole ride. And was it ever a ride.
I think this author has a very special gift. I hope he has a long life and publishes often.
Dark and disturbing but ultimately satisfying short story that takes us into the life and mind of a troubled teenager.
A real page turner. Shann's blurb tells it straight up. I live in San Francisco Bay Area and have seen teenagers survive by their wits and sticky fingers like FeeBee. Very good read with no apparent typos. Grammar I am not so sure about because the Brit's do not speak proper English. 5 stars all the way. Author should stop diddling around and give us a novel.
