Review:A delightful reminder for adults and children alike to infuse life with the same vibrance and love we experience as children. What could have otherwise been a hard lesson, preaching work over play, or even play or work, Basileia instead hints at a more nuanced possibility - why not take joy in what you do? Why not use the tools of imagination and exploration as an adult? Why must we forsake all we dreamt of as a child as we grow older?
This independently published short story includes black and white sketches throughout the book, which echoes its child-like lesson. The only thing more compelling than its premise may well be its inspiration. The dedication is directed towards the author's students, who, when asked "What makes you come alive?", were the brave pioneers that began the creation of this story. So, it seems very fitting this book be published to give back what was once given.
Synopsis (spoilers):
Basileia: The Land Behind the Silver Door is a short story depicting the dull work lives of the adults of the village Adamah in contrast to the colorful and fun-filled lives of the children, who spend their days exploring and creating in the beautiful land of Basileia. When one of the children stays behind to work in the family garden, she begins to forget about Basileia and the interests that brought her vitality. Her best friend, in an effort not to also forget the wonder and beauty of the Land Behind the Silver Door, brings her friends' beloved sketchbook from the mystic land. As if imbued with the same magic of Basileia, the girl's talisman brings with it the ability to create beauty, the same kind found in Basileia. With this synthesis of productivity and creativity, the girls set off to collect more items from Basileia. Soon, the withered village of Adamah becomes a lively community of vibrant, happy people, both children and adults.
Discloser: If my review seems biased at all, it may be due to the fact that the author is my cousin. That did not stop me from me getting misty when the girl begins to forget Basileia. You've been warned.
