These stories are bad. They are so terrible. A collection of short stories written over the span of thirty or more years. (The author lost count.) Step into the world of Katrina Joyner's wit, humor, and occasional drama with this collection.

Tiptoe Through Time and Space eBook Katrina Joyner

A dragon with a split personality, deadly space races, family vacations that travel through time: all are part of "Tiptoe Through Time and Space", a delightful compilation of fantastical short stories by Katrina Joyner.

Ms. Joyner confesses to writing a few of these shorts while in high school; and although it is evident which ones those are, I can't say enough good things about her ability and style.

With an awesome imagination, a terrific command of the language, and with an assured and mature style, the author easily takes the reader from one story to the next. Each short story has its own voice and pace; its own quality.
My personal favorite by far is "A Chance Encounter of Two." Wondrously funny, you'll meet the playfully addled Fox and the cleverly sly Fire all in one fire-breathing dragon. The dialog is a joy to read. This is a LOL knight's tale of the first order, and I bestow five stars upon it alone.

"The Golden Ship," is a cautionary tale that feels so real, and has so much depth, I found it difficult to read the inevitable ending. These are wonderfully drawn characters, with human frailties even though they are by no means human. Witness these sentences (and I'm not giving anything away here):
"He waited for his death, knowing it was coming, wondered why it had not happened. His grandmother's cackle echoed somewhere in the past."

Prose doesn't get much better than that.

In "A Troll's Tail" Ms. Joyner has managed to give the reader a wonderful coming-of-age story in the form of an adventure between two very different friends. The choices one has to make as an adult is the lesson learned, but is told with such flair that it doesn't seem at all hackneyed.

"The Scent of Wild Heather" is the story of love found, then lost. Lee-i, an ELF (Bioengineered Legionnaire of the Field) and a ranger in the forest protects the land and saves baby dragons. He is empathic. All-in-all the perfect man. When he finds the girl he names Heather his life is suddenly transformed. He can see his future; can see that this Heather can communicate empathetically on an even higher plain; can see the two of them living their lives together as rangers. And then just as suddenly, she is wrenched away. Beautifully written.

With "Slingshots" the author gets you into the story in a hurry and you go on a wild ride. The characters are real, the dialog is snappy. A space race of chicken to the nth degree. How can you not love lines like this: "Herman went along with Taus's plans because they usually ended happily with money, liquor, and a night he couldn't remember. Besides, she would kill him if he did not."

In the love story, "Eternal," Ms. Joyner does a great take on soul-mates and past lives. Poignant, it makes its claim on your heart early on. And I do love the line about the Iraq war: "How many more bodies did those sands have to claim before it was finally over?"

"Family Trip" is right out of the "Twilight Zone." Cute story, but could use a little editing, and maybe a little stretching to give it more oomph.

There are 12 stories in all. I can only think of one or two that I might have left out simply because they didn't come up to the standards of all the others.

The short story form is extremely hard to do well, but Ms. Joyner will soon be a master at it. I'm giving the collection 4.5 stars, with the half star taken away for the couple of pieces I didn't think belonged with this group and a few small editing errors/typos.

Will look forward to reading Katrina Joyner for many years to come!

Tiptoe Through Time and Space eBook Katrina Joyner Reviews

A delightful collection of short stories. Takes your imagination on a ride through enchanted forests with split-personality schizophrenic dragons. I enjoyed reading the compilation and thought the author brilliant with her words and point of view!
